JIMMY BUFFETT’S PIRATE CAN CRY ME A RIVER

Today is my birthday.

It’s not just any birthday, it’s a nice, round number.

It’s also the number young adults typically reach for when quantifying
(and perhaps qualifying) “some old guy”.

Let’s just say Jimmy Buffett’s “pirate looking at 40” can cry me a river.

Roger Daltrey of The Who famously belted out the infamous lyrics, “I
hope I die before I get old” back in the 60s.  Decades later, when he
clicked over to the same age I am now he told a reporter that, in
retrospect, he was still happy to be alive after all.

Nice.

Fast-forward twenty-two more years and he’s still here.  So both he
and I have that going for us.

And hey, even the song “My Generation” itself is a year older than I
am.

So by now you’ve figured out I’m not lacking a sense of humor about
all of this.

After all, exactly ten years ago today I made the mistake of allowing
myself to get all sideways and cranky.  I still regret that.

I pledged today would be different.  I’ve been cracking jokes all day
so far, and it’s been good for the soul.

Weirdly, I’ve found an unexpected euphoria in the simple notion that
I now get a full ten years before I have to face another “round
number”.  Sweet.

But more importantly, I’ve decided to treat today like a true milestone
rather than merely a symbolic one.

Today is the day that some things are going to change.

Not being one for foxhole promises or new year’s resolutions, this is
more of a beckoning realization.

I’m going to get in the best shape of my life, because I know how and
it’s already within reach.

There are bigger, better and more meaningful adventures to go on
than ever, and they need to happen.

It’s also time to take my own advice and boldly go after some of the
fully reasonable “SMART-ish” goals for X & Y Communications I’ve
been mulling over recently, instead of in many ways waking up each
day doing what I did the day before.

The irony there is that sometimes doing what you love can turn into
an end in itself, even as there is yet a higher level within relatively
easy grasp.

Now I know how some of you Ten-Plus guys have felt when I don’t
hear from you as often after five or seven sessions.  When one sees
tangible, positive results, the refreshing absence of pain can cloud
one’s other senses…especially the sense of urgency.

Could it be that good old masculine ambition is often one of the first
casualties?

Let’s just say I’m not going to wait around to find out.  In the coming
months you’ll see a renewed focus on next-level developments for
you guys.

Notwithstanding some high-quality women with a healthy curiosity
who I know are out there, each and every one of you reading this is
an evolved man of character and depth.

Advice on how to get better with women is immensely valuable to
you, but achieving true greatness even more so.

So I’m standing by your side in that quest, from this day forward
more than ever before.

For example, remember that conversation we had a month or so ago
about building a new community for “big four” men?  That’s coming
soon, starting with a private Facebook group.

If I get enough encouraging feedback, I may open a co-ed Facebook
group also.  That would be the first chance ever for you and Emily’s
“big four” women to interact.

And yes, once and for all Emily and I will be doing our first-ever
program together.  It will go beyond The Leading Man’s focus on
managing relationships, giving you practical steps to LIVING the
right relationship with the right woman.

So, here’s to the next half-century…which starts today.
